1984 Rolex Submariner Reference 16800
In 1979, production of the Rolex Submariner, reference 1680, concluded. In the early 1980’s, Rolex unveiled the Submariner reference 16800, a refreshed diver’s watch with a new dial, improved quickset movement, sapphire crystal, and slimmer case proportions. This example is the sought-after “transitional” 16800, featuring a matte, not gloss, dial with tritium hour plots and tritium hands. The matte dial is in impeccable condition, and the lume has aged to a strong eggshell, of course hands and pip match. The 39mm steel case is in fairly strong condition, as the lugs are thick, although a previous polishing has diminished the bevels. The bracelet is original and correct: 93150 Oyster, with 593 end pieces. This watch keeps good time and has been recently serviced. This early variant of the 16800 is the quintessential intermediary between modern and vintage.
